Arteta Faces Injury Crisis Ahead of Pivotal Champions League and Premier League Fixtures
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has admitted uncertainty over the fitness of several key players, including Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka, and Jurrien Timber, as the Gunners prepare for a season-defining week. The quintet of Rice, Saka, Martin Odegaard, Timber, and Riccardo Calafiori were all absent from Tuesday's open training session, raising alarms ahead of Wednesday's Champions League quarter-final second leg against Sporting CP at the Emirates Stadium.
Arteta Remains Coy on Specific Timelines for Returns
Speaking to reporters, Arteta revealed he does not know when some of his star players will return, emphasising the need to assess their conditions closer to match time. "We have to wait until tomorrow morning to see how a few of the boys are, and then make the right decision with them," the Spaniard explained. When pressed on Rice's issue, Arteta was evasive, stating, "I will see how he is tomorrow, but he obviously wasn't available to train."
He added that Rice's heavy game load has contributed to the problem, but the midfielder is determined to feature. "He is going to try to do everything he possibly can to be with us tomorrow evening. That's for sure," Arteta noted.
Saka's Achilles Issue and Timber's Uncertain Status
Regarding Bukayo Saka, Arteta confirmed the winger is dealing with "an Achilles issue" that he has been managing for some time. "No setback, there is progression. Hopefully, it's a matter of days and not weeks. But he has to see how he responds when he increases his load," Arteta said. On the possibility of Timber or Saka returning, he offered a cautious "Maybe one of them, so let’s see."
Arteta provided no update on Odegaard or Calafiori, who both missed last week's 2-1 loss to Bournemouth, though they could be in contention this week. Meanwhile, Piero Hincapie and Eberechi Eze were seen in training after being limited to bench roles at the weekend.
Season-Defining Week Looms for Arsenal
The injuries threaten to leave Arteta without four or five potential starters during what he described as the "biggest opportunity" in his six-and-a-half-year tenure. However, he stressed that focus remains solely on the Champions League clash. "The first task is qualifying for the semi-final of the Champions League. A big game. There's no space for the weekend," Arteta asserted.
Arsenal face Sporting on Wednesday 15 April, followed by a crucial Premier League away match against second-placed Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday 19 April. This double-header could significantly impact their title hopes and European ambitions, making the fitness of key players like Rice, Saka, and Timber all the more critical.
