Mikel Arteta has eased concerns over Declan Rice's fitness, revealing the midfielder is eager to return for Arsenal's pre-season after a neural issue during the World Cup.
Arteta on Rice's Fitness
Rice struggled with a neural problem affecting his hamstring and lower back during England's World Cup campaign, leaving him bed-bound for three days before the quarter-final win over Norway. He returned to play 82 minutes in the semi-final defeat to Argentina and scored in the bronze-medal match.
Speaking ahead of Arsenal's friendly with Girona, Arteta said: 'When I speak to Declan Rice, he is already saying, "Ok, if I come this day, then I can play then." That is much more powerful than the programme. We want to adapt to the context, which is different.'
Squad Energy and Ambition
Arteta praised the squad's attitude after winning the Premier League last season. 'First of all, I saw the energy in the bodies, in their eyes, how they look. And then the players, it was incredible – the shape that they have all come back, better than ever.'
He added: '100 per cent. This has to be the start and this has to be the standard. Excellence has to be our standard and this has to drive to attack the future.'
Pre-Season Schedule
Arsenal face Girona on Saturday, followed by friendlies against Real Betis, Borussia Dortmund, and Como before the Community Shield against Manchester City on August 16. Their Premier League title defence begins at home to Coventry City on August 21.
