Arteta Lauds Gyokeres' Mental Fortitude After Arsenal Victory
Mikel Arteta has highlighted Viktor Gyokeres' remarkable composure both on and off the pitch following the Swedish striker's decisive performance in Arsenal's latest Premier League triumph. Gyokeres came off the bench to score twice against Sunderland, securing a vital three points that extended Arsenal's lead at the summit to nine points over Manchester City.
Gyokeres' Prolific Form in 2026
With his brace against Sunderland, Gyokeres has now netted six times across all competitions in 2026, making him the most prolific Premier League player in this calendar year. His clinical finishing proved crucial in a match where Arsenal needed to maintain their momentum in the title race.
When questioned about his striker's mindset after the game, Arteta provided revealing insight into Gyokeres' psychological makeup. "With Viktor when you look at him, it's very difficult to understand his emotions," the Arsenal manager explained. "Because he looks straight at you and you don't really know. But he doesn't seem too affected by the real highs or the lows. That's what we need, stability - he's very demanding of himself. He's constantly trying to improve and that's really, really good."
Arteta Emphasizes Consistency and Adaptation
The Arsenal boss elaborated on what makes Gyokeres such a valuable asset to his squad, noting the striker's ability to adapt to different game situations. "He came on in moments as well when the game probably was a little bit more open. Today he had more company as well, in and around him. It depends on the opponent, it depends on the context," Arteta observed.
Arteta placed particular emphasis on Gyokeres' daily approach to improvement. "But for me, what really makes a difference is the consistency that he shows every single day, to practise, to train, to understand better his team-mates, his relationships, to speak up and demand the kind of movement, the kind of balls and deliveries that he wants as well. And then he needs to do what he's done today as well, and really put it to work."
Title Race Caution Despite Commanding Lead
Despite Arsenal's commanding nine-point advantage over Manchester City, Arteta remains determined to keep his squad grounded and focused on the immediate challenges ahead. When pressed for his verdict on the title contest, the manager maintained his characteristic pragmatism.
"I'm going to have a beautiful dinner tonight and tomorrow I'll start to prepare for Brentford, because it's going to be a really tough one," Arteta stated. "We still have to win so many games to achieve what we want, so let's not focus on that, that's something else, we've done our job now, we've had what we have to do, assess that, try to improve it and get ready for Brentford. We have to keep raising our level."
Sunderland Manager Concedes Arsenal's Title Credentials
Sunderland manager Regis Le Bris offered a frank assessment of Arsenal's championship prospects following his team's defeat. When asked directly if he believes Arsenal can win the title, Le Bris responded unequivocally: "Yes, I think so."
The Sunderland boss elaborated on what makes Arsenal such formidable opponents. "They're impressive, really well organised, hard to beat with many threats off the bench, especially with wingers because they can make a big difference towards the end."
Arteta's Satisfaction with Performance and Clean Sheet
Arteta expressed particular satisfaction with both the result and aspects of his team's performance against a challenging opponent. "I'm very, very happy with the win, with big parts of the performance, with the clean sheet as well, because it's a really tough opponent," he added.
The Arsenal manager acknowledged Sunderland's tactical strengths while praising his own team's ability to overcome them. "They're really good at what they do, really good at breaking play, playing to the last man, breaking your press, holding the ball and very difficult to get sequences with threat and momentum consecutively. But we knew that, I think the first goal really helped to unlock that kind of phase. And then again, the finishers, they came on the pitch and immediately they had a huge impact."
This victory follows Arsenal's comprehensive 4-0 win over Leeds United the previous weekend and places them in a commanding position in the title race as Manchester City prepare to face Liverpool in their upcoming fixture. The combination of Gyokeres' clinical finishing and Arteta's strategic management appears to be creating a formidable partnership as Arsenal pursue Premier League glory.
