Arsenal Manager Mikel Arteta Issues New William Saliba Injury Update

Arsenal are set to face Mansfield Town in the FA Cup fifth round on Saturday afternoon, but the Gunners will likely be without key defender William Saliba due to an ankle injury. Manager Mikel Arteta has expressed pessimism about the French centre-back's chances of featuring in the upcoming match.

Saliba's Ankle Issue Persists

Saliba was ruled out of Arsenal's recent victory over Brighton with an ankle problem, and Arteta confirmed it is a different injury from previous ones. "No, it's the other one," Arteta stated in a pre-match press conference. "We thought the same straight after the game because he wasn't comfortable to finish the game. After straightaway he didn't have a good feeling so let's see if he recovers quickly." When asked if Saliba could be in contention, Arteta added, "I doubt it."

The defender has been instrumental for Arsenal this season, making 34 appearances across all competitions and playing a crucial role in their pursuit of silverware. His absence could be a significant blow as the team navigates a busy fixture schedule.

Potential Opportunities for Young Players

With Saliba sidelined, attention turns to other squad members who might step up. Teenager Max Dowman, who has recently recovered from his own ankle issue, could be handed an opportunity. Dowman was named on the bench for the Brighton match and has impressed in training.

Arteta reflected on what Dowman has learned from his injury layoff: "A lot. First of all, you miss playing, that's the first thing, so don't take it for granted because it can be taken away from you when you don't expect it, and for a long time as well. He had different routines, he starts to understand more the rehab coaches, the physio, the doctor, the importance of the scan, the discipline that you need to maintain yourself fit when you have an injury because if not, it's going to take a long time to get back to your levels. But he's done so well. He's been looking really good in training and hopefully we can give him chances to play."

Upcoming Fixtures and Title Push

Following the FA Cup clash with Mansfield Town, Arsenal will shift focus to the Champions League, where they are set to face Bayer Leverkusen in the last 16. The first leg is scheduled for Wednesday evening in Germany. Subsequently, the Gunners will host Everton at the Emirates Stadium next Saturday as they continue their push for the Premier League title.

Arteta is expected to make several changes to the starting lineup for the Mansfield game, balancing squad rotation with the need to advance in the cup competition. The injury to Saliba adds to the challenges, but Arsenal will aim to maintain momentum across multiple fronts.
