Theo Walcott believes Mikel Arteta will start Mikel Merino ahead of Viktor Gyokeres 'a lot more often' for Arsenal in major fixtures, after the Spaniard's impressive display as a false nine in Sunday's 1-1 draw with Chelsea. The former Arsenal forward told Sky Sports that Merino is 'more trusted' in big games, citing his experience and reliability.
Merino, 29, scored the equaliser at Stamford Bridge with a header from Bukayo Saka's cross, his third goal in his latest run up front. He had previously netted a brace in the Champions League win over Slavia Prague, while Gyokeres was sidelined with injury. The £63.5million summer signing from Sporting has faced criticism for his impact in high-stakes matches, with his goals coming against Leeds, Nottingham Forest, and Burnley, whereas Merino has scored against Newcastle, Chelsea, Liverpool, and Real Madrid this season.
Walcott said: 'I think he's more trusted in the big games. You know what you are going to get. I think Gyokeres will be more of an impact player in the big games. I can see that happening a lot more often.' He added that watching Merino from the bench could help Gyokeres adapt his game.
However, fellow pundit Daniel Sturridge disagreed, arguing that Arsenal need a natural striker like Gyokeres on the pitch. 'They’ve been crying out for a striker. Merino brings stability, but you need your big hitters out there. Gyokeres was bought to provide goals in big moments,' Sturridge said.
The debate comes as Arsenal continue to integrate both players, with Merino excelling in the false-nine role and Gyokeres yet to fully convince in marquee fixtures. Arteta faces a selection dilemma ahead of upcoming matches, including the clash with Manchester United.
