Arsenal, Napoli tracking Monza striker Gustavo Varela

Arsenal and Napoli are both tracking Monza's 21-year-old striker Gustavo Varela, according to reports in Italy. The Portugal Under-21 international has made a rapid impact since joining the newly promoted Serie A side from Benfica over the summer.

Varela has scored six goals in his first six Serie A appearances and eight goals in seven games across all competitions. In a 4-0 win over Cagliari on Monday, he scored twice and provided an assist for on-loan Southampton winger Jay Robinson.

Interest from Italy and England

Gazzetta dello Sport reports that Arsenal are tracking the striker. Napoli are also said to hold serious interest in the forward, with 'all of Serie A's top sides keeping tabs' on Varela.

Monza are managed by former Southampton boss Ivan Juric, who brought in England Under-19 winger Jay Robinson on a short-term deal.

Benfica buy-back clause

Portuguese outlet Record reports that Benfica will be able to re-sign Varela for just €9.5 million (£7.96m). Monza paid €2.5 million (£2.1m) for him in late July. The buy-back clause can be triggered at the end of the season, and Benfica also hold a 20 per cent sell-on clause in the contract.
