Pre-match routines were altered due to health guidelines. Instead of gathering in a pub, Stillman and 11 others met in two groups of six under a railway bridge, drinking from tins. The entry process moved him to tears as stewards applauded each fan individually, reminding him of past trips to Highbury with family members who could not be present.
Inside the stadium, fans quickly re-engaged with the matchday experience, shouting advice to players like “To him! To him!” and “Take him on, Nico!” The players acknowledged the crowd with warm applause before kick-off. Stillman reflected that the evening underscored how being a fan means being part of a community and that a matchday is a precious ritual.
