Mikel Arteta has admitted Arsenal “have to blame ourselves” after they let a two-goal lead slip to draw 2-2 with Wolves at Molineux. A 94th-minute equaliser from substitute Tom Edozie denied the Premier League leaders a win, leaving them five points clear of Manchester City but having played a game more.
The Gunners had looked comfortable after first-half goals from Bukayo Saka and Piero Hincapié, but Hugo Bueno pulled one back before Edozie’s late strike earned a point for the bottom-placed side. Arteta said he was “extremely disappointed” with the result and criticised his team’s second-half performance, stating it “didn’t show anything close to the standards required in this league to win”.
“We have to blame ourselves,” Arteta added. “Any hit, any bullet, take it, because we didn’t perform at the level that is required.” The result extends Arsenal’s run to two wins in seven league matches, and they face a north London derby against Tottenham on Sunday.
Edozie, a 19-year-old academy graduate, scored less than 10 minutes into his Premier League debut. Wolves manager Rob Edwards revealed the youngster had only been training with the first team for a few weeks. “Sometimes you have a feeling and that gut has proved right,” Edwards said. “As he was coming on, I just put my arm round him and said: ‘This could be your moment, go and take it.’”
