Manchester United winger Antony has pledged to 'evolve' in the face of mounting criticism following his £86 million summer move from Ajax. The Brazilian, who forced through a transfer to reunite with Erik ten Hag, has struggled to justify his price tag since scoring on his debut against Arsenal.
In a defiant social media post, Antony wrote: 'Important week for us!! Seeking to evolve to give my best to the team! It has always been a dream to be here and I will give all I have to honour this club cause we are stronger together!' His goal and assist statistics have disappointed, with his last goal coming in early November.
Criticism has come from several pundits. Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand said on his FIVE YouTube show: 'The concerning thing for me with somebody like Antony is that he can't beat anyone – and for a Brazilian that's surprising!' Darren Bent added on TalkSport that Antony might be a 'YouTube footballer', questioning where his end product is despite an impressive highlight reel.
However, club legend Paul Scholes defended the 23-year-old after the defeat to Arsenal, stating: 'I think Antony looked as lively as I have seen him all season so fingers crossed he can create chances and score more goals.' Antony has started 10 of United's 20 league matches this season.
