Andy Robertson Opens Up About Tottenham Transfer Interest and Liverpool Commitment
Liverpool defender Andy Robertson has revealed the truth behind transfer talks with Tottenham Hotspur during the winter window, confirming it was his decision to stay at Anfield. The Scotland captain, 31, also hinted he is ready to sign a contract extension with the Reds, despite his current deal expiring in three months.
Robertson's Decision to Snub Tottenham and Stay at Liverpool
In the final days of the January transfer window, Tottenham emerged as a surprise suitor for Robertson, presenting an opportunity to end his nine-year spell at Liverpool. The veteran left-back acknowledged there was genuine interest and discussions took place between both clubs. However, Robertson made it clear that he chose to remain with Liverpool, a decision he confirmed after Friday night's 3-1 FA Cup win over Wolves.
"There was obviously interest there - there were discussions had with both sets of clubs," Robertson said. "But the decision was that I wanted to stay. We stayed at Liverpool and that was the decision made."
Commitment to Liverpool and Contract Extension Hints
Robertson emphasized his unwavering commitment to Liverpool, where he has played since 2017, and suggested he is open to extending his stay. Despite being likely to attract numerous suitors as a free agent in the summer, the defender expressed a desire to continue his relationship with the club.
"I was never not committed. I've been committed to Liverpool for the last eight and a half or nine years now and I'll be committed until I'm no longer needed," Robertson stated. "This club has given me everything and I've given this club everything. It's been a fantastic relationship so hopefully that continues."
Behind-the-Scenes Dynamics and Future Talks
The transfer situation was complicated by an injury to Joe Gomez, but Liverpool respected Robertson's wishes due to his tremendous service. Robertson stressed that contract negotiations will remain private, with fans being informed once a decision is made. He highlighted his strong relationships with key figures at the club, including Richard Hughes, Mike Gordon, and Michael Edwards.
"I've always said that [the talks] will stay between me and the club. I don't think it will get played out in public," Robertson explained. "When a decision is made, and we're getting to the point where I only have three months left on my contract, it will be announced to you guys."
On-Field Performance and Team Dynamics
Despite being usurped by summer signing Milos Kerkez in Arne Slot's team this season, Robertson delivered an impressive performance against Wolves, helping Liverpool reach the FA Cup quarter-finals. He broke the deadlock in fine fashion, demonstrating his value on the pitch.
Robertson concluded by focusing on his footballing priorities, stating, "My focus never came off trying to help the lads on the pitch and in training. Whatever was happening behind the scenes happened, and all I can say is that I kept focusing on football."
