Liverpool Defender Andy Robertson Explains Tottenham Transfer Rejection

Liverpool's steadfast defender, Andy Robertson, has publicly disclosed the reasoning behind his decision to decline a potential move to Tottenham Hotspur during the January transfer window. The 31-year-old Scottish international emphasised his unwavering dedication to the Merseyside club, stating his intention to remain until he is "no longer needed."

Winter Window Discussions and Commitment to Liverpool

Robertson confirmed that substantive talks were held between both clubs as Tottenham, grappling with relegation concerns, sought to bolster their squad. Despite the overtures, Robertson ultimately chose to stay at Anfield, where he has been a fixture since his arrival in 2017, amassing an impressive 369 appearances.

"There was obviously interest there - there were discussions had with both sets of clubs," Robertson remarked following his goal in Liverpool's FA Cup victory over Wolves on Friday. "But the decision was that I wanted to stay. We stayed at Liverpool and that was the decision made."

He further elaborated on his mindset, asserting, "I was never not committed. I've been committed to Liverpool for the last eight and a half or nine years now and I'll be committed until I'm no longer needed. That's always been my mindset. This club has given me everything and I've given this club everything."

Contract Situation and Future Prospects

With Robertson's current contract set to expire at the season's end, speculation about his future persists. The left-back, who has found himself behind Milos Kerkez in the pecking order this season, remains focused on contributing whenever selected.

Robertson stressed the importance of maintaining privacy regarding ongoing negotiations, highlighting his strong relationships with key figures at the club, including Richard Hughes, Mike Gordon, and Michael Edwards. "I've always said that (the talks) will stay between me and the club. I don't think it will get played out in public," he explained. "I have got an amazing relationship with these people... out of respect to them, and they have respected me, then the conversations will be in-house."

The potential domino effect of a transfer was also noted; had Robertson moved to Tottenham, Kostas Tsimikas would have returned from his loan spell at Roma, but the Greek defender also remained with his current setup.

Focus on Trophies and Season Objectives

Looking ahead, Robertson reiterated his primary ambition: to secure silverware with Liverpool. "My thought process is I want to win trophies at Liverpool," he declared. "That has always been my focus. Every season, I want to win trophies, whether that is an FA Cup, the Carabao Cup, the Champions League, the Premier League."

He acknowledged the challenges of the current campaign, with Liverpool out of the Carabao Cup and facing difficulties in the league, but remains optimistic about their remaining opportunities in the FA Cup and other competitions. "All of our focus is on trying to make this season as successful as possible... If we have more performances like we did tonight, then we have a chance," Robertson concluded, aiming to end the season with smiles all around.
