Former England and Liverpool forward Andy Carroll has made a surprising admission about his football management ambitions, revealing he had little interest in coaching until social media megastar KSI unexpectedly appointed him as Dagenham & Redbridge's caretaker boss.
An Unexpected Appointment
The 37-year-old striker was handed the Daggers' managerial reins last Wednesday after new minority owner KSI decided to dismiss former manager Lee Bradbury. This controversial decision came despite the club securing a victory against Farnborough in what proved to be Bradbury's final match, leaving the team positioned 12th in the National League South standings.
Immediate Success on the Pitch
Carroll's managerial tenure began spectacularly last Saturday with a crucial 1-0 triumph over play-off rivals Torquay United, witnessed by an elated KSI from the stands. The success continued this Saturday as Carroll's side defeated Hampton & Richmond Borough 3-1, marking their third consecutive victory and strengthening their push toward the play-off positions.
Carroll has now openly discussed this unexpected career development, emphasizing he would only consider the permanent managerial position if he could simultaneously continue his playing career.
Management Was Never the Plan
'Management was never something I wanted to do,' Carroll confessed to The Sun. 'But I always knew that if there was a chance for me to do it, I could. It's something that is exciting me at the minute. I'm really happy with the way it is going, but I never thought about it and it just fell on my lap.'
The forward, currently sidelined with injury but still under contract as a player, elaborated on his dual ambitions: 'I want to play football. I'm still contracted here to play football and that's what I want to do every single day. If that includes having the manager's job alongside it, so be it. But being the boss permanently and not being able to play football isn't something I'd do right now.'
Embracing the New Role
The former Liverpool and England international appears to be adapting remarkably well to his unexpected responsibilities. Carroll celebrated passionately on Saturday when Stan Leech completed a first-half hat-trick for the Essex-based club. Maintaining a calm demeanor on the sidelines while dressed entirely in black, his composure only broke when his team found the back of the net.
Meanwhile, KSI enthusiastically participated in the celebrations, wearing a club shirt and joining the players on the pitch at full-time. The YouTuber-turned-boxer has been actively involved since acquiring his minority stake, with Carroll watching the first match of KSI's ownership alongside him earlier this month.
Background and Challenges
Carroll joined Dagenham as a player last summer following his departure from Bordeaux, scoring six goals in twelve appearances before sustaining his injury in December. The striker also holds a minority stake in the club alongside his playing and now managerial commitments.
However, Carroll's appointment comes amidst personal legal challenges. The former Premier League star is scheduled to stand trial next January after pleading not guilty to breaching a non-molestation order. He has been accused of repeatedly contacting his ex-wife Billi Mucklow, with whom he shares three children.
Non-molestation orders are civil court injunctions designed to prevent individuals from approaching specific people. Breaching such an order carries serious consequences, including potential imprisonment of up to five years.
Despite these off-field complications, Carroll has demonstrated immediate managerial competence, securing victories in both matches under his leadership while maintaining his primary desire to continue playing football at the professional level.
