Ruben Amorim has cast doubt on his future as Manchester United head coach after a tepid 1-0 defeat to West Ham United at the London Stadium. The result leaves United 17th in the Premier League table, with only two matches remaining before the Europa League final against Tottenham.
Tomas Soucek’s backheel in the 26th minute proved decisive, deflecting off Harry Amass to beat Altay Bayindir. United failed to muster a meaningful response, with Rasmus Højlund squandering two presentable chances and Bruno Fernandes shooting over from distance. The performance drew sharp criticism from Amorim, who pointed to a lack of urgency and fear among his players.
“It’s mentally. We are not scared of losing a game as Manchester United,” Amorim said. “We don’t have that fear any more and that is the most dangerous thing that a big club can have.” The Portuguese questioned whether the side deserved a Champions League berth, even if they win the Europa League, suggesting they should “learn how to be competitive one week at a time” instead.
United have now lost 17 league matches this season, 13 under Amorim, and their hopes of European silverware are the only bright spot in a dismal campaign. The head coach admitted the club needs a cultural overhaul, warning that “if the feeling is still here we should give space to different persons.”
The defeat also saw defender Leny Yoro limp off with a potential injury, though Amorim described it as “a small thing.” United travel to Chelsea on Friday before facing Tottenham in the Europa League final on 21 May.
