Former Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has caught the eye with his new touchline look at AC Milan, swapping tracksuits for suits. The Portuguese coach has explained his decision.
From Tracksuits to Suits
At United, Amorim usually wore tracksuit tops, quarter-zips and coats, rarely a suit and jacket except during the 1-0 Europa League final defeat to Spurs. But in his first friendly match in charge against Celtic, a 2-2 draw, he was seen in a full suit and shirt.
"I felt a bit of pressure from my coaching staff, who told me that things are different here and that you have to present yourself differently," said Amorim. "Milan is the city of fashion, so we have to represent our city in the best possible way. Part of our club's history isn't just about how you play, but also how you represent yourself and your city. That's why I'm going to dress like this on the bench."
Amorim's New Role at AC Milan
After a turbulent tenure at Manchester United, Amorim was sacked in January 2026 following a 1-1 draw with Leeds United. He was appointed as AC Milan's new head coach in June 2026, signing a deal until 2028 with a club option to extend by a year.
Regarding his suitability for the high-pressure job, Amorim said: "I think I was chosen for a number of reasons. They thought I was the right person because of the way I want the team to play and they wanted to play the same way. And I think they chose me not only for the success I've achieved, but also because my experience at a big club like Manchester United helped them better understand who I am."
A Childhood Fan with Rebuilding Plans
Amorim also revealed his personal connection: "The most important thing now is to understand the kind of club I'm at and its history. For me, it was easier this time because I've been a Milan fan since I was a child, so I know the club's culture, its philosophy, and its history."
He added: "All of that is in the past. Our goal is to build a new future. We have to realise that we are in a different context, we want to take risks by betting on young players and we want to rebuild. You could say it's a risk for the coach as well, but I prefer to take that risk and be excited about something new. And, again, they chose me for a reason, one being that I like taking on teams going through a difficult time. I know it's challenging, but we want to rebuild something."
