Ruben Amorim has remained silent since being sacked by Manchester United in January after a 14‑month tenure that ended following a 1‑1 draw at Leeds United. The 41‑year‑old Portuguese has not posted on social media or spoken publicly, but has been seen at various events in recent weeks.
In February, he attended the Qatar Open in Doha, watching Carlos Alcaraz's match. Last month, he visited the Padel Expo club in Lisbon with Manchester City sporting director Hugo Viana, with whom he played at Braga and worked at Sporting CP. The club posted: 'We tried to reinforce our technical staff but it wasn’t possible. Thanks a lot for the visit.'
Amorim also visited the Aguias de Camarate Football School in Lisbon on 28 March, posing for photos and signing autographs. The club said: 'Our young athletes had the opportunity to share unique moments... Moments like this will forever remain in the memory of our kids.'
Earlier this month, he returned to Clube Atletico e Cultural (CAC) in Odivelas, Lisbon, where he played as a youth. The club posted on Instagram: 'A good son always returns home. ... Between photos, smiles and lots of fun, it was heard: "Come to CAC." Do you accept the challenge, Ruben?'
Amorim is reportedly a leading contender to take over at Benfica, should they part ways with Jose Mourinho at the end of the season, according to Portuguese outlet ZeroZero. Such an appointment would be contentious given the fierce rivalry between Benfica and his former club Sporting, but Amorim began his youth career at Benfica and later played for the club until 2017.
Benfica currently sit seven points behind leaders FC Porto, with nothing left to play for, while Sporting are third but have a game in hand. Brazilian side Vasco da Gama have also been mentioned as potential suitors.
