Liverpool manager Arne Slot has delivered a crucial update on the fitness of star goalkeeper Alisson ahead of the Reds' Premier League clash with Tottenham at Anfield. Alisson, 33, missed Liverpool's recent 1-0 Champions League defeat to Galatasaray due to a minor muscle issue, casting doubt over his availability for Sunday's high-stakes match.
Alisson's Race Against Time
During his pre-match press conference on Friday, Slot revealed that Alisson sustained the injury while passing the ball, but scans confirmed it was not severe. "He felt something when he passed the ball in one of his muscles," Slot explained. "After we checked it, it was minor, so it didn't take long. But games follow up so fast he had to miss Gala. Hopefully, he is ready to play Sunday. If not, then definitely Gala on Wednesday."
This update suggests that Alisson could feature against Tottenham if he passes a late fitness test, with Giorgi Mamardashvili on standby to deputise once more. The Brazilian's potential return would be a significant boost for Liverpool, who are heavy favourites against a struggling Spurs side.
Chiesa Set to Return, Isak Still Out
In more positive news for Liverpool, Slot confirmed that winger Federico Chiesa is expected to be available after recovering from his own fitness concerns. "I expect he feels better," Slot stated. "He is able to train with us today." However, striker Alexander Isak remains sidelined, having not yet returned to full training following a broken leg in December, with a comeback anticipated next month.
Tottenham's Dire Form
Liverpool host a Tottenham team in crisis, with Spurs on a run of six consecutive defeats and sitting just one point above the relegation zone. Manager Igor Tudor is already under pressure after only four games in charge. Despite this, Slot is cautious, acknowledging the threat of a wounded opponent. "I think if Tottenham were No.1 in the league at the moment every fan would expect us, at home, to win," he said. "That's if we play against Man City, that's if we play against Arsenal, that's every game this club plays at home, we're expected to win."
Youth Prospects and Squad Management
Slot also addressed the situation surrounding young talent Rio Ngumoha, who has been tipped for more playing time amid Mo Salah's goal drought. However, the manager emphasised the need for careful management to prevent injuries. "He cannot [have] too many days on the pitch because of stress fractures," Slot noted, referencing similar issues with Jayden Danns. "Rio can start for us. I said he would get more playing time and we saw that, so he is an option to start one of the upcoming three games."
As Liverpool prepare for a pivotal period, Slot's updates highlight both immediate concerns and long-term planning, with key players like Alisson and Chiesa pivotal to their ambitions in the Premier League and Champions League.
