Former Liverpool and Real Madrid midfielder Steve McManaman has backed Liverpool to win the Champions League final, despite his affection for his former club. Speaking ahead of Saturday's clash in Kiev, McManaman said Liverpool look 'stronger and quicker' and predicted a high-scoring victory.
McManaman, who spent four years at Real Madrid and won two Champions League titles with the club, acknowledged his divided loyalties. However, he believes Real Madrid are not as strong as they were two years ago and may need to refresh their squad. 'Liverpool can show them they need to refresh their squad this summer. They are the ones on the climb,' he said.
The former midfielder also praised Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, suggesting his high-pressing style will not run out of steam at Anfield as it did at Borussia Dortmund. McManaman argued that Dortmund's decline was due to key players leaving for Bayern Munich, a scenario he does not see repeating at Liverpool with financial backing.
McManaman urged Liverpool's players to seize the opportunity to become Champions League winners, highlighting the iconic moment of captain Jordan Henderson lifting the trophy. Despite warnings from friends in Madrid about Cristiano Ronaldo's ability to step up in finals, McManaman remains confident in Liverpool's strength and pace.
