Melbourne Demons star defender Steven May has been suspended for one match after an altercation with teammate Jake Melksham while drinking, violating concussion protocols. The incident occurred on Sunday evening in Prahran after the pair had dinner with teammates.
May, 30, was not permitted to drink as he was under AFL concussion protocols following a head knock in round 11. The club's leadership group recommended the ban, which was endorsed by broader leadership, ruling him out of the Queen's birthday clash against Collingwood.
Melbourne general manager of football performance Alan Richardson said both players were “incredibly remorseful” and that the scuffle escalated from a “lighthearted disagreement.” He emphasized the importance of club culture and values over on-field impact.
This is not May's first off-field incident; in 2019, he avoided suspension for drinking while injured. Both players will also complete community service as part of the sanction.
