South Africa secured their place in the Africa Cup of Nations knockout stages with a 3-2 victory over Zimbabwe in a dramatic Group B climax. Hugo Broos's side join group winners Egypt, who had already advanced after a goalless draw with Angola.
Bafana Bafana took the lead in the seventh minute when Tshepang Moremi’s deflected strike looped over goalkeeper Washington Arubi. Zimbabwe equalised through Tawanda Maswanhise, who skipped past two defenders before lashing the ball home.
Burnley striker Lyle Foster restored South Africa's lead early in the second half with a header. However, after Ronwen Williams saved Maswanhise's effort, defender Aubrey Modiba turned the rebound into his own net to level the scores again.
The decisive moment came seven minutes from time when Marvelous Nakamba was penalised for handball in the box. Oswin Appollis converted the penalty to secure victory and send Zimbabwe out of the tournament.
Egypt, already through to the last 16, rested Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush for their final group game against Angola, which ended 0-0. South Africa join Egypt, Nigeria and Algeria as the first four teams to qualify for the knockout rounds.
