Goals from Lawrence Shankland and Cláudio Braga overturned Stevie May's early opener, but Lewis Smith equalised for the hosts. The Edinburgh side finished with 10 men after Marc Leonard was sent off in added time.
Derek McInnes, the Hearts head coach, said: 'Absolutely two points dropped. We lost two really poor goals. We came here with a lot of motivation, the fans turned up and I thought we looked ready for that … but we were guilty of giving up that control and authority.'
Celtic cut the gap to three points after Kelechi Iheanacho scored his first goal in six months to secure a 2-1 win at Dundee. The Nigerian striker controlled Marcelo Saracchi's cross and fired home from six yards in the 82nd minute, cancelling out Simon Murray's penalty equaliser. Yang Hyun-jun had given Celtic an early lead.
Celtic manager Martin O'Neill said: 'For the first time, a fortnight ago, I had to question whether we really, really wanted it. ... We've come in with renewed determination. Did we reset our attitude? Absolutely, I think we did.'
Rangers earlier moved top on goal difference with a 4-2 victory over Dundee United. Goals from Ryan Naderi, Dujon Sterling, Thelo Aasgaard and Bojan Miovski proved decisive. Danny Röhl said: 'We have to stay on the front foot. We have to be humble and ready for the next fight.'
