Enrique Riquelme Launches Radical Real Madrid Presidential Bid
Riquelme Challenges Perez for Real Madrid Presidency

Enrique Riquelme has officially launched his campaign for the presidency of Real Madrid, setting the stage for the first contested election in two decades as he challenges the long-serving Florentino Perez. The renewable energy tycoon is vowing a radical transformation of the club, rejecting piecemeal solutions to address what he describes as a prolonged trophy drought.

Ambitious Plans for Members

Riquelme's flagship proposal is the conversion of the Valdebebas training ground into 'La Ciudad del Socio' (The Members' City), a sprawling social complex designed to re-engage supporters. The hub would feature an exclusive hotel, swimming pools, a gym, and various sports courts and activities. Additionally, he plans to build a new 15,000-capacity arena for Real Madrid's basketball team, which would also host concerts and other events.

Financial Reforms

Among his key pledges are a 50 per cent reduction in membership fees and the introduction of a lottery system for 10,000 season tickets, making access more equitable. Riquelme has strongly criticised Perez's proposal to create a subsidiary that would allow outside investors to buy a stake in the club, accusing the current president of attempting to 'privatise the club'. He insists that Real Madrid belongs to its members and must remain under their control.

Riquelme argues that between 2004 and 2026, Real Madrid has 'lost its essence' and its members have 'lost their club'. His project, developed over several years, aims to restore the members' central role and ownership. The election is expected to be a pivotal moment for the club, with Riquelme positioning himself as the candidate for change against Perez's established leadership.
