Powerball Expands to UK, Creating Larger International Jackpots
Powerball Goes International, Launching in UK This Summer

Powerball, the iconic American lottery game renowned for creating multimillionaires, is set to cross the Atlantic this summer in a groundbreaking international expansion. Players in England, Scotland, and other parts of the United Kingdom will soon be able to participate, marking the first time a lottery outside the United States contributes to the Powerball jackpot.

Historic Agreement Announced

On Tuesday, an agreement was unveiled between the Multi-State Lottery Association, which operates Powerball, and Allwyn UK, the company behind the UK's National Lottery. This deal, pending approval from a UK gambling commission, aims to build larger jackpots by drawing more players globally.

Matt Strawn, head of Powerball and CEO of the Iowa Lottery, emphasized the strategic move: "We're constantly looking for ways to ensure Powerball remains culturally and commercially relevant. This expansion is the natural next step in achieving that goal."

How It Works for Players

For American players, nothing changes: tickets remain $2, with the same long odds of winning the jackpot at 1 in 292.2 million. However, the inclusion of UK players will create a larger pool, accelerating jackpot growth. Strawn noted: "Surveys consistently show players want faster-growing jackpots. Higher prizes attract more participants, boosting sales and further increasing jackpots in a virtuous cycle."

UK players will gain access to significantly larger jackpots than currently available in domestic or European lotteries. For instance, Powerball's record payout exceeded $2 billion in 2022, while EuroMillions, also operated by Allwyn in the UK, awarded a top prize of £195 million that same year.

Key Differences and Similarities

While the same jackpot amount will be available on both sides of the Atlantic, payouts will be in dollars for the US and pounds for the UK. Estimated jackpot amounts will differ due to currency conversion rates and tax advertising practices—the US lists pretax prizes, unlike the UK.

Additionally, UK winners will receive their jackpots over 30 years, whereas US winners can choose between an annuity or a cash lump sum, with most opting for cash. Smaller prizes will vary between the two countries, but all players compete for the same grand jackpot.

Game Details and Impact

Powerball is played in 45 US states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Players select five white balls from 1 to 69 and one red Powerball from 1 to 26, with drawings held on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays.

Andria Vidler, CEO of Allwyn UK, stated: "Our goal is to bring more innovation and excitement to the UK National Lottery. Powerball, with its transformative jackpots and support for good causes, epitomizes this ambition."

This expansion will not affect Mega Millions, another major US lottery game. In the UK, over 31 million people play National Lottery games annually, promising a significant boost to Powerball's global reach and jackpot potential.
