Tragic Rockfall Claims Two Climbers at World-Famous Montserrat Site
Two individuals have lost their lives following a devastating rockfall at the internationally celebrated climbing destination of Montserrat, situated approximately thirty miles northwest of Barcelona. The catastrophic incident occurred on Saturday afternoon, casting a shadow over the picturesque Catalan landscape.
Emergency Response and Fatal Outcomes
A man and a woman, both thirty years old, were transported to hospital in critical condition after being hit by multiple substantial stones during a rock climbing excursion. The pair, who had been engaged in climbing activities throughout the day, were discovered unconscious near a parking area known as Can Jorba, close to El Bruc on the southern flank of Montserrat, at around 4:30 p.m.
The male climber, part of a group of seven individuals, required immediate resuscitation at the scene after emergency personnel found he had suffered cardiac arrest. Despite these efforts, he passed away shortly after being transferred to Vall d’Hebron Hospital in Barcelona. The female climber was airlifted to hospital via air ambulance but, tragically, succumbed to her injuries late last night at Bellvitge University Hospital in the city.
Preventive Measures and Official Statements
In response to the tragedy, the Montserrat Mountain Trust, a public entity established in 1987 to safeguard the stunning massif, enacted an immediate preventive closure of five climbing routes. This decisive action followed an inspection by police mountain specialists, which identified a significant risk of further rockfalls.
Xavier Aparicio, the trust's manager, emphasized that the closure aims to prevent additional accidents, stating, 'The aim is to prevent more accidents.' The climbers, believed to be residents of Barcelona, have been locally identified by their first names, Marc and Laura.
