The fourth stage of the 2026 Tour de France is underway amid extreme heat conditions, with temperatures exceeding 40°C in parts of the route. Organisers have implemented additional safety measures to protect riders, including extra water stations and adjusted race timings to avoid the peak heat of the day.
Heatwave Impacts the Race
According to weather officials, the heatwave gripping southern France has pushed temperatures well above seasonal norms. The stage, which covers 180 km from Montpellier to Nîmes, passes through areas with limited shade, raising concerns over rider health.
Race director Christian Prudhomme stated, "The safety of the riders is our top priority. We have added more water points and medical support along the route." Teams have also been advised to monitor their riders closely for signs of heat exhaustion.
Riders Adapt to Conditions
Several riders have commented on the challenging conditions. Defending champion Tadej Pogačar said, "It's incredibly hot out there. We're drinking more than usual and trying to stay in the shade when possible." The extreme heat is expected to influence race tactics, with breakaways potentially suffering more in the high temperatures.
Medical teams are on high alert, with extra ice vests and cooling stations available at the finish line. The UCI has also relaxed rules on feeding zones to allow more frequent hydration.
