Man City face UEFA action risk after Premier League verdict

Manchester City face the risk of another potential punishment, with UEFA reportedly keeping an eye on developments regarding their case against the Premier League. City were found guilty of all but one of the 115 charges brought against them by the English top flight, and now face a wait to discover what sanctions are imposed.

Sham Sponsorship Allegations

One of the charges against City alleges that the club arranged "sham" sponsorship deals to inflate their revenues by around £900million, with the allegations dating between 2009 and 2018.

In the meantime, City submitted an appeal last week as they continue to reiterate their innocence, claiming to have a "comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence" which would clear their name. A three-person panel will oversee the appeal submitted by City, with a ruling expected to be decided before the end of the season.

UEFA Monitoring Developments

A report in Sky Sports has claimed that UEFA are now "monitoring developments" from the case and will make a decision on whether to take any action against City once the final outcome has been decided. It has been claimed that UEFA will wait until the outcome of the appeal before making a decision on whether to take action of their own against City.

It now remains to be seen what punishment UEFA could theoretically take against City in the event that the club's appeal is unsuccessful.

Previous UEFA Sanctions

Back in 2020, UEFA found City guilty of breaching Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules and were given a fine and were banned from competing in European competition for two seasons. City appealed the verdict to the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) and the ban was overturned, with the fine reduced from €30m (£25.4m) to €10m (£8.5m).

In terms of sanctions from the Premier League, a range of punishments have already been suggested, with a points deduction and a fine mentioned as potential outcomes. There have also been suggestions that a punishment could come in the form of the club being stripped of past major honours, as well as expulsion from the Premier League.
