For the second consecutive game at the World Cup, the United States national anthem has caused confusion and frustration among players and fans alike. A pre-recorded instrumental version of the anthem was played at an unusually fast tempo before the USA's group stage match against Turkey, leaving players visibly out of sync and supporters watching at home baffled.
Players Struggle to Keep Up
Television footage showed several USA players clearly out of time with the music, desperately trying to match the accelerated pace. Some players abandoned the effort entirely, closing their eyes and simply listening. The anthem was sung live during the USA's first match of the tournament, but subsequent games have featured a musical recording that appears to be sped up.
Fans took to social media to express their confusion and frustration. One fan wrote: "Why is the US national anthem being played so fast during the World Cup?!" Another commented: "Anthem was played at 2x speed for some reason." A third added: "FIFA playing the US national anthem at legit like 2.5x speed and slowing down at random parts."
Fan Outcry on Social Media
The issue sparked a wave of reactions online. One supporter urged: "The US national anthem track that they are using for the world cup is too fast needs to be way slower to aura farm more." Another demanded: "SLOW DOWN THE ANTHEM! SLOW IT DOWN!" A frustrated fan questioned: "Whose idea was it to play the US National Anthem at SUPERSONIC SPEED???? You couldn’t even sing along with it!! Disrespectful!!"
One fan directly addressed FIFA: "FIFA really needs to slow down the US national anthem. It was incredible in Seattle with everyone singing it but you can tell that it’s too fast for the crowd and the players to keep up with it. Slow it down to normal tempo."
Match Context and Result
Despite the anthem disruption, the USA had already secured their place in the round of 32 before facing Turkey, following convincing wins against Paraguay and Australia. However, the match itself ended in a 3-2 defeat for Mauricio Pochettino's side. Auston Trusty scored from close range to give the USA an early lead, but Turkey responded through Arda Guler and Baris Yilmaz to take a 2-1 advantage into halftime. Sebastian Berhalter equalized for the USA, but Kaan Ayhan scored a winner deep into stoppage time to secure victory for Turkey.
The USA will now look to regroup as they prepare for the knockout stages, hoping that the anthem tempo issue is resolved before their next match.
