Thomas Tuchel watched on as England let a semi-final lead slip to go out of the World Cup, with Argentina scoring two late goals to win 2-1. Anthony Gordon had given England the lead just before the hour mark, but Tuchel's defensive substitutions and a passive approach allowed Lionel Messi to assist both goals, including the winner in injury time.
Tuchel's Previous Criticism of Southgate
Tuchel had earlier criticized England's style under Gareth Southgate, telling ITV: "The identity, the clarity, the rhythm, the repetition of patterns, the freedom of the players, the expression of the players, the hunger. They were more afraid to drop out of the tournament than in my observation than having the excitement and hunger to win it." Those words now appear awkward as Tuchel employed similar tactics.
Pundits Accuse Tuchel of Same Mistakes
The majority of pundits criticized the ex-Chelsea boss for simply looking to hold onto a slender lead rather than pushing for another goal against the world champions. Tuchel conceded his side became "too passive" after scoring, saying: "We're disappointed, we were so close but we got too passive after we scored and conceded a lot of chances. We could not turn the ball possession around and then conceded so many crosses, chances and shots."
Tuchel Accepts Responsibility
Tuchel underlined his desire to lead England into the next major tournament, a home Euros, but acknowledged the coach takes the blame. "Of course, the responsibility is on the coach and if it doesn't go well, it is easy to say it was wrong," he said.
