Pundit Michael Stewart was left astonished by the VAR decision to overturn Dundee United star Abdoulaye Yoro's yellow card and instead book Dundee's Ryan Finnigan.
The incident occurred at Tannadice, where referee David Dickinson initially brandished a yellow card for the Dark Blues player after VAR official John Beaton alerted him to check the sideline monitor.
Stewart's reaction
Stewart, in the commentary booth, experienced the same shock as he blasted a call he branded "absolute madness." The former Hibs and Hearts man had vowed earlier this summer after copping an SFA ban over his forthright opinions.
The new 'mistaken identity' rule allows VAR to intervene in cases of wrong decisions where the wrong player has been booked, permitting them to caution the guilty party. However, Stewart and the watching audience reckon it was the wrong call to punish Finnigan for the flashpoint on the edge of the Dundee United box.
Commentator's fury
Stewart, commentating for Premier Sports, said: "He (Finnigan) is running with the ball, he's kicked the ball; you can't punish Finnigan for that. That is absolute madness. He can't book Finnigan, that is absolute madness. That is madness; he is running with the ball and Yoro slides into his path. I am sorry, that is madness. He doesn't even stretch, Finnigan."
BBC commentator Steven Thompson also branded the decision "outrageous."
