Graham Potter has said he has no regrets about leaving Brighton for Chelsea, despite being booed by Seagulls fans and sacked after just seven months in charge. Now head coach of Sweden, Potter had contrasting spells at the two clubs, who meet at Stamford Bridge on Sunday afternoon.
Brighton success and Chelsea struggles
Potter enjoyed an excellent three-year spell at Brighton, leading the club to a ninth-place finish in the 2021/22 season, then the Seagulls' highest-ever Premier League placing. That earned him a move to Chelsea in the early days of the club's new ownership group, led by Todd Boehly.
In a sign of things to come at Stamford Bridge, Potter would last just a matter of months. One of the lowest points of his troubled reign came back at the Amex Stadium, where Roberto De Zerbi's side romped to a 4-1 victory in October 2022.
Booed by Brighton fans
Potter was roundly booed by Brighton fans but insisted he had nothing to apologise for to his former club. He said: "I have nothing to say sorry for. I think I did a good job at the club and left it in a good place but people are entitled to their opinions."
He added: "It's part of the process [at Chelsea]. You have to suffer and feel pain in order to grow and get better. Nobody said we were the finished article. We have to take the pain today and learn from it."
Sacked after 11th defeat
Sadly for Potter, little progress was made and he was sacked following an 11th defeat in 31 games, with the Blues 11th in the table and 12 points off the top four. The former Swansea boss took more than a year out of the game after that blow.
Reflecting on his brief Chelsea reign, he insisted he had no regrets about taking the job. He told the Telegraph: "The first six months were tough because I worked really, really hard to get that type of opportunity.
"I don't think it was the only opportunity I was going to get because I left Brighton in a really, really good place. So it was about choosing the right opportunity. And I didn't choose the wrong one, it just didn't work out.
"I don't have any regrets over doing it, but, at the same time, when anybody loses their job, there's an element of frustration, anger and maybe bitterness at some point."
Sweden role after West Ham
Potter's time at West Ham was similarly short-lived before he was appointed Sweden boss in 2025. At the World Cup, he led the team out of a tough group before they were beaten 3-0 by France in the round of 32.
