Manchester City have been found to have violated Premier League financial rules on 114 occasions, with an independent panel determining the club broke the rules across a nine-year period from 2009 to 2018. The charges were initially brought against the club in 2023, and City, who have consistently stressed their innocence, are believed to be appealing the ruling.
Guardiola's record under scrutiny
Attention has now turned to how Pep Guardiola's achievements at the Etihad Stadium might be viewed should City's appeal prove unsuccessful. The Spanish tactician accumulated 17 major honours at the Etihad Stadium throughout a decade-long tenure.
The former Bayern Munich and Barcelona manager has long had an intense rivalry with ex-Manchester United coach Jose Mourinho. During a 2024 press conference, Guardiola was questioned about parallels between his celebration of six titles and Mourinho's three, and he joked that he hoped his spell wouldn't conclude in a manner similar to Mourinho's dismissal at Old Trafford.
Mourinho's withering response
That response and Guardiola's emphasis on their contrasting records evidently hit a nerve for the current Real Madrid manager, who delivered a withering response during a pre-match media session while in charge of Fenerbahce. He said: "Guardiola said something to me yesterday. He won six trophies and I won three, but I won fairly and cleanly. If I lost, I want to congratulate my opponent because he was better than me. I don't want to win by dealing with 150 lawsuits."
Speculation over stripped titles
Speculation is now swirling regarding whether City might be stripped of silverware from the era during which they are found to have violated top-flight regulations. Such circumstances could result in managers, including Mourinho, being awarded winners' medals.
It was nearly two years ago when the now 63-year-old playfully suggested the prospect that his former club, United, might be handed the 2018 Premier League crown held by City. He said: "I think we still have a chance to win that league... and then they have to pay me the bonus and give me the medal."
During Mourinho's tenure, United finished second to City in 2018, his last complete season at the helm at Old Trafford. He was subsequently dismissed in December 2018 following a disappointing beginning to the 2018/19 season.
