Hearts full-back Harry Milne is set to complete a remarkable Roy of the Rovers-style journey as he prepares to lead the team out for their Champions League qualifier against Sturm Graz. The 29-year-old has climbed from the Highland League to the pinnacle of European club football, a path he describes as a "unique journey."
From Cove Rangers to Champions League
Milne's ascent began in 2019 when he won the Highland League title with Cove Rangers. Since then, he has played in every tier of Scottish football, including League Two, League One, the Championship with Partick Thistle, and the Premiership with Hearts over the past 18 months. Now, he is set to make his Champions League debut, a feat he admits would have seemed far-fetched just a year ago.
"It's exciting. I feel like if you'd said to me a year and a half ago that I'd be coming here to play in the Champions League, it would've seemed a bit of a stretch," Milne said. "But that's the way football works, and we deserve to be here. Hopefully we can make the most of it."
Leadership Role Under New Manager
New Hearts boss Wouter Vrancken has confirmed that Milne will captain the side in the absence of injured club captain Craig Halkett. With nine new signings and the departure of last season's captaincy group, Milne is one of the experienced heads tasked with gelling the team together.
"I guess sometimes you look at it as an opportunity to stamp your authority on the team," Milne said. "There are a lot of new guys and a lot of new faces coming into the squad, so you feel a responsibility to help them settle in—not only into the team, but into Scotland as well."
Preparations for the Big Stage
Milne is confident that the team is ready for the challenge, despite having only three weeks of pre-season under Vrancken. He praised the squad's willingness to learn and implement the manager's ideas. Over 1,300 Hearts fans are expected to travel to Graz for the first leg, and Milne is determined to deliver a positive result.
"It's the first competitive game we've had and it's been weeks in the making," he said. "We've got a good travelling support coming, so we want to show them that this year we're going to go about our business in the right way. It would be a great start by getting a positive result."
Milne remains in touch with former Cove Rangers teammates Jordan Brown and Mitch Megginson, who recently had testimonials. He reflects on his journey with gratitude, acknowledging the support of teammates and coaches. "The Champions League is special. It's the biggest competition we've got here in Europe," he added.
