Danny Rohl Rangers Future in Doubt as Salzburg Talks Begin

Rangers face another managerial upheaval as Danny Rohl is reportedly in discussions to become the new boss of RB Salzburg. The German coach only took over at Ibrox in October, replacing Russell Martin, but now appears set to depart after just eight months in charge.

Rohl's Impact at Rangers

Rohl was brought in to steady the ship after Martin's exit and managed to guide Rangers back into a title race alongside Hearts and Celtic. However, a post-split collapse saw them finish third, 10 points behind champions Celtic, who also eliminated them in the Scottish Cup quarter-finals on penalties.

Despite fan calls for his dismissal, chairman Andrew Cavenagh publicly backed Rohl. But reports from Germany now indicate that RB Salzburg have identified him as their top target after Daniel Beichler was sacked following a third-place finish in the Austrian Bundesliga.

Potential Successors

If Rohl leaves, Rangers' American owners will be hunting for their third manager in just over a year. Two obvious candidates are Steven Gerrard, who previously won the title at Ibrox and is currently out of work, and Derek McInnes, the former Rangers midfielder who led Hearts to within three minutes of the Premiership title. However, McInnes has turned down Rangers before and may be reluctant to leave Tynecastle, especially after losing Lawrence Shankland to the Gers on a free transfer.

Rohl's Previous Stance

Just last month, Rohl dismissed speculation linking him with Wolfsburg and Union Berlin, stating: "There are probably a lot of rumours going around... My focus is here in Glasgow. I like the job because I can compete for titles here and play internationally." Despite these comments, talks with Salzburg are now ongoing.

Pre-Season Plans

Rangers are scheduled to fly to Austria for an eight-day training camp on July 10. It remains uncertain whether Rohl will still be in charge by then. The club's fans are growing weary of the constant upheaval and late-season slumps, and this latest development adds to a summer of uncertainty at Ibrox.
