Michael Carrick has included Marcus Rashford in Manchester United's 26-man travelling squad for the pre-season friendly against AC Milan in Wroclaw, Poland, this afternoon. The match carries added significance following Ruben Amorim's appointment at the San Siro earlier this summer.
Fallout and loan spells
During his tenure at Old Trafford, Amorim and Rashford had a major falling out that appeared to end the 28-year-old's time at the club. Amorim dropped Rashford for the Manchester derby in December 2024 and banished him from training. In January, Rashford joined Aston Villa on loan for the remainder of the season.
Upon his return, Rashford was placed in a 'Bomb Squad' and joined Barcelona on a season-long loan that summer. During that spell in Spain, Amorim was sacked by United and replaced by Michael Carrick.
Squad selection and fan poll
Rashford was expected to join Barcelona permanently at the end of last season, but the Catalan club chose not to activate his £26m buy clause and signed Anthony Gordon instead. Following the World Cup, Rashford returned to United and was in Dublin this week. He did not feature against Leeds but has since been chosen to travel for the Milan clash.
An MEN Sport reader poll asked: 'Should Marcus Rashford play against AC Milan on Saturday?' Of 2,799 votes cast at the time of writing, 84 per cent voted 'Yes', 13 per cent voted 'No', and three per cent were 'Unsure'.
Rashford is joined in the travelling squad by Kobbie Mainoo, who also had a difficult time under Amorim. Teenage prospect JJ Gabriel has been given another opportunity with the first team.
