Virgil van Dijk has come under fire for his post-match comments following the Netherlands' shock penalty shootout defeat to Morocco in the World Cup Round of 32. The Liverpool captain insisted that the team's game plan had "worked" despite their early exit, sparking widespread criticism from fans and pundits.
Netherlands Exit World Cup After Penalty Heartbreak
The Netherlands were eliminated from the World Cup after losing 3-1 on penalties to Morocco following a 1-1 draw. Cody Gakpo had put the Dutch ahead in the second half, but Issa Diop equalized in the 91st minute to force extra time. In the shootout, the Netherlands missed three penalties, while Morocco converted all of theirs to secure a place in the Round of 16 against Canada.
The result was a major upset, as the Netherlands were considered strong contenders to go deep into the tournament. Their early exit has become one of the biggest stories of the 2026 World Cup.
Van Dijk's Controversial Comments
Speaking after the match, van Dijk said: "Very difficult to analyse it now. An intense match. I think we were well organized defensively. They basically couldn't find the open man between the lines. So the game plan worked, of course. I think we scored a good goal."
He added: "If you look at almost all the big teams at the World Cup: they also just drop back and they also wait for the right moment to apply pressure. We trained hard on this for two days; at times it went well. Of course, there are always things that can be improved, but anyway, that doesn't help us right now."
Fans React on Social Media
Van Dijk's remarks were quickly met with backlash on social media. One fan wrote: "Yes Virgil, gameplan succeeded greatly! Much success! Managed to get a draw after parking the bus for 90 minutes, conceding after going 1-0 up and then missing 3 pens. Good process!" Another said: "21% possession in the 2nd half, was that the gameplan?" A third commented bluntly: "You can say anything but not that the game plan worked."
Statistics showed that the Netherlands had just 0.24 expected goals (xG) compared to Morocco's 1.4, while Morocco also had nearly double the number of shots on goal. The Dutch were content to sit back and absorb pressure, a tactic that ultimately backfired.
Morocco Advance to Face Canada
Morocco will now face Canada in Houston on Saturday for a place in the quarter-finals. The Atlas Lions will be buoyed by their victory over one of the tournament favorites and will look to continue their historic run.
