Geraint Thomas will end his professional cycling career with a farewell appearance at the 2025 men's Tour of Britain, which concludes in his hometown of Cardiff on 14 September. The six-day race begins on 9 September in Suffolk, starting from Woodbridge, and finishes with a celebratory stage in the Welsh capital.
Thomas, winner of the 2018 Tour de France and multiple Olympic and Commonwealth Games gold medals, said he feels 'so lucky' to end his career on his own terms. He described his journey as coming full circle, having started at Cardiff's Maindy velodrome. The 19-season veteran expects an emotional farewell and will wear a special red jersey featuring a Welsh dragon and a drawing by his son.
The route includes rolling roads in Suffolk and the Midlands before two demanding stages in south Wales. The penultimate stage features two ascents of the Tumble near Abergavenny, while the final day tackles Caerphilly Mountain just 10 kilometres from the finish. Other riders expected include Remco Evenepoel, Julian Alaphilippe, Oscar Onley, and Tao Geoghegan Hart.
Thomas acknowledged the significance of ending in Cardiff, saying he may never have ridden a bike without his proximity to the Maindy track. He also paid tribute to race director Rod Ellingworth, his former coach. The event marks the end of an era for British cycling, with Thomas leaving a legacy of resilience and success.
