Geraint Thomas Appointed Ineos Grenadiers Director of Racing After Retirement
Geraint Thomas takes new Ineos Grenadiers role

Welsh cycling legend Geraint Thomas has officially embarked on a new career path, being named the Director of Racing for the Ineos Grenadiers team just months after retiring from professional competition.

The 39-year-old brought the curtain down on his illustrious 15-year riding career at the Tour of Britain in September, a fitting finale that concluded in his hometown of Cardiff.

From Domestique to Team Leader and Beyond

Thomas's journey with the squad, originally known as Team Sky, is the stuff of cycling legend. He started as a key domestique, sacrificially supporting champions like Bradley Wiggins and Chris Froome.

His dedication and talent eventually propelled him into the team leader role, a position he magnificently justified by winning the 2018 Tour de France, securing the famous yellow jersey.

His palmarès is further decorated with victories at Paris-Nice in 2016 and the Criterium du Dauphine in 2018. Thomas also secured two additional Tour de France podium finishes and experienced the heartbreak of a narrow defeat at the 2023 Giro d'Italia, where he lost the overall lead on the final time-trial to Primoz Roglic.

A New Role to Recapture Past Glory

The appointment comes at a pivotal time for Ineos Grenadiers. After years of dominance during the Team Sky era, the team has struggled to win a Grand Tour since the 2021 Giro d'Italia.

They are banking on Thomas's vast experience to help end this drought. In his newly created position, he will work closely with Team Principal Dave Brailsford and Performance Director Scott Drawer.

His responsibilities will provide crucial input on race strategy, rider recruitment, development, and race readiness.

"This team has been my home since day one, and stepping into this role feels like a natural next step," Thomas said. "I've learnt so much from the people around me and I now want to continue building on our incredible past success into the future."

The Unparalleled Experience of a Champion

Team Principal Dave Brailsford was effusive in his praise for the Welshman. "Geraint typifies what it means to be a Grenadier," Brailsford stated.

"He has lived and breathed elite performance throughout his career. He always set himself very ambitious goals and invariably went on to achieve them."

Brailsford also highlighted the intangible value Thomas brings, noting his understanding of the process and his ability to deal with the highs and lows of elite sport.

Beyond his road racing success, Thomas is also a decorated track cyclist, having won two Olympic gold medals and three world championships as part of Great Britain's team pursuit squad.

This unparalleled breadth of experience at the very pinnacle of the sport makes him a uniquely qualified asset as Ineos Grenadiers plot their return to the top.
