A cyclist has been jailed after a dangerous ride through South Yorkshire, putting pedestrians and motorists at risk. Victor Szymanski, 22, was sentenced to 12 months in prison after footage of his reckless cycling went viral.
The incident, which took place in Rotherham, showed Szymanski weaving through traffic, mounting pavements, and narrowly avoiding collisions. Police described his actions as "deliberately dangerous" and a clear threat to public safety.
Reckless Behaviour Caught on Camera
Dashcam and mobile phone footage captured Szymanski's high-speed cycling, including moments where he forced pedestrians to jump out of the way. Officers from South Yorkshire Police tracked him down after the videos circulated online.
PC Mark James, who led the investigation, said: "This was not just careless cycling—it was a deliberate disregard for the safety of others. The outcome could have been far worse."
Cycling Laws and Sentencing
Under UK law, cyclists can be prosecuted for dangerous cycling, which carries a maximum penalty of two years in prison. Szymanski pleaded guilty to the offence at Sheffield Crown Court.
Judge Sarah Wright told him: "Your actions were utterly irresponsible. You showed no concern for anyone else on the road."
Public Reaction and Road Safety
The case has reignited debates about cycling safety and the need for stricter enforcement. Local residents praised the police for their swift action, while cycling groups emphasised that such behaviour is not representative of most riders.
South Yorkshire Police have urged all road users to follow traffic laws and remain vigilant to prevent accidents.
