Australian cricket superstar Steve Smith has become $1.4 million richer thanks to a shrewd investment decision he made nearly a decade ago. The 36-year-old batsman invested $100,000 in online bedding and furniture retailer Koala back in 2015, acquiring a ten per cent stake in the company at that time.
ASX Debut Delivers Major Payday
After Koala debuted on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) list on Tuesday, Smith found himself celebrating a significant financial windfall. His investment vehicle, SS415 Investments, is now the eighth-largest shareholder in the company. Following market fluctuations, the value of his shares rose by 11.7 per cent just before the close of business.
This surge left Koala valued at just over $13.2 million, translating to a $1.4 million payday for the cricketer. Smith, who is pictured with his wife Dani Willis and after scoring an Ashes century in January, has demonstrated impressive financial acumen away from the cricket field.
Diverse Business Portfolio
Beyond his successful Koala investment, Steve Smith maintains a diverse portfolio of business interests. He serves as an ambassador for Bamboo, an Australian financial technology application designed to assist users with investing in digital currencies and precious metals.
Additionally, Smith co-founded Oat Milk Goodness and was an early investor in Snappr, an online photography marketplace. These ventures underscore his strategic approach to building wealth outside of his sporting career.
Cricket Career Developments
On the cricket front, Smith's recent form has sparked discussion. Despite delivering electric performances for the Sydney Sixers in the Big Bash League (BBL) during January, he was surprisingly overlooked by Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises.
He is currently competing in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) for the Multan Sultans, under the leadership of fellow Australian Ashton Turner. Smith is expected to be named in Cricket Australia's latest contract list on Wednesday, following his inexplicable omission from the squad ahead of the disastrous T20 World Cup.
World Cup Disappointment
Australia failed to progress beyond the group stage in the T20 World Cup, suffering embarrassing defeats against Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka. Smith was eventually called up as an injury replacement for Mitch Marsh in Sri Lanka but only featured for two overs in the field against Oman.
This marked the first time in seventeen years that Australia was eliminated in the preliminary stage of a global tournament. Reflecting on the team's performance, T20 captain Mitch Marsh expressed profound disappointment.
'It's a bitterly disappointed change room,' Marsh stated. 'We've built for two years to get here and, unfortunately, we didn't play our best in a couple of games we needed to... that's tournament play.'
