Thousands of football supporters gathered in bars and pubs across Merseyside this evening to watch the highly-anticipated World Cup final between European champions Spain and reigning world champions Argentina.
There was ecstasy for Spain supporters as Ferran Torres slotted home a crucial goal in extra-time to beat Argentina, who were playing with ten men after Enzo Fernandez was sent off in the late stages of normal time. Despite late efforts from Argentina, it was Spain who managed to hang on to their one-goal advantage.
Second World Cup Title for Spain
Spain had won the World Cup once before in their first appearance as finalists, defeating the Netherlands in the 2010 final when the sides met in South Africa. The victory in New Jersey this evening is their second World Cup title. Argentina had won the title three times previously, after lifting the trophy in 2022, 1986 and 1978.
Excitement in Liverpool
Excitement built across Liverpool throughout the day as a sea of red and blue supported their respective nations. The ECHO visited Gravity Max where hundreds of Spanish supporters cheered on their side as they waved Spain scarves and draped themselves with the flag of the nation. One bar which proved popular with Argentina supporters was Seel Street's Sensation Bar. An incredible atmosphere could be felt inside the bar as supporters danced and sang as they watched the final unfold.
The party atmosphere will continue long into the night here in Merseyside and elsewhere across the globe as people celebrate the end of another spectacular World Cup competition.
