England were in deep trouble at lunch at 112 for five, with debutant Akash Deep taking three wickets and Ravindra Jadeja removing Ben Stokes. However, Root combined with Ben Foakes (47) for a 113-run stand in the afternoon session, and later with Ollie Robinson (31 not out) to frustrate the Indian bowlers.
