In a masterful display of Test-match batting, former South Africa skipper Dean Elgar announced his arrival in the County Championship with a commanding century for Surrey, utterly dominating Worcestershire's bowling attack on the opening day at the Kia Oval.
The left-handed opener, in his first championship appearance for the defending champions, was in imperious form. He crafted a flawless 140 from 212 deliveries, a knock punctuated with 19 crisp boundaries, as he guided his side to a formidable total of 339 for 3 at stumps.
Elgar's innings was the bedrock of Surrey's dominance, providing a textbook example of patience and precision. He formed a colossal 221-run partnership for the second wicket with England's Dan Lawrence, who contributed a stylish 75. Their union effectively broke the back of the Worcestershire attack, leaving the visitors chasing shadows for much of the day under the London sun.
Surrey's captain Rory Burns had earlier laid a solid foundation, making a brisk 45 before falling to paceman Joe Leach.
