Siena men's lacrosse head coach Liam Gleason has died at the age of 41, three days after suffering a traumatic brain injury in a fall at his home. The university announced his death on Wednesday.
Gleason, who had been head coach for seven seasons, led the Saints to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference championship and an NCAA Tournament berth this past season. Siena president Chuck Seifert described his death as a 'sudden, senseless loss' and praised Gleason as 'universally loved and admired'.
Gleason is survived by his wife and three children. A fundraising effort has been launched to support the family. On Wednesday, dozens of people, including Siena players in uniform, lined a hospital hallway as Gleason was taken to surgery to donate organs; the school announced his death shortly after.
A former standout player at the University at Albany, Siena's local rival, Gleason began his coaching career as a Siena assistant before returning to Albany as an assistant. He returned to Siena as head coach in 2018. His funeral will be held on Saturday on Siena's campus.
