Thomas Tuchel Vows 'Gritty' England Ready for Fight with 'Emotional' Argentina
Tuchel: England Ready for Fight with Emotional Argentina

Thomas Tuchel has declared that England will display equal measures of “emotion, grit and mentality” as reigning world champions Argentina when the two sides meet in the World Cup semi-final in Atlanta. The Three Lions are chasing their first World Cup final appearance since their triumph in 1966, while Argentina are defending their crown and aiming for back-to-back titles.

Tuchel Promises Fight and Passion

Speaking ahead of the clash, Tuchel acknowledged the fierce rivalry between the nations, which extends beyond the pitch. “We know what to expect, we know what we are up against,” he said. “But we are also emotional, we have the grit, we have the mentality that it takes to go up against it. And we are ready for it. This is the time to go for it.” He noted a shift in mood within the England camp, adding, “I feel another change of mood. 'Oh wow, we're getting close now.’”

Argentina, under manager Lionel Scaloni, are bidding to become the first team since Brazil in 1962 to win consecutive World Cups. Tuchel, who has coached some of Argentina's players, highlighted their resilience. “They have this kind of edge. You can sense it when they're going a goal down, and when matches are tight. They're a tough team to beat. They don't panic when they're behind. They believe in their style. And their style is a very emotional style. It was in Qatar and it is now.”

Historical Rivalry Fuels Argentina

Tuchel also pointed to the historical context that motivates Argentina. “Of course, history, they are also fuelled by that, they are fuelled by history, it means a lot to them.” The England boss, however, is focused on the immediate challenge. “I don't dive into the legends stuff. Or I did not do until now. Preparation is of course not finished. I think to be emotional before these matches is important, but I'm not sure if I go into the legends stuff. This is just the product that comes with it, as a consequence. I still want focus on what they need to do, to become that.”

This semi-final is only England's fourth in World Cup history, following appearances in 1966, 1990, and 2018. Tuchel insists his team will not look beyond the match, as they aim to write a new chapter in English football history.
