The boxing community in Northern Ireland and beyond is in mourning following the tragic death of promising heavyweight Paul McCullagh Junior. The Belfast fighter, known by the ring moniker 'The Irish Drago', passed away at the age of 25 after a short illness.
A Promising Career Cut Short
Paul McCullagh Jr built a formidable reputation during his time in the amateur ranks. His standout achievement came in 2019 when he clinched the prestigious Ulster Elite heavyweight title. That same year, he represented both Ulster High Performance in a bout against New York and earned the honour of fighting for Ireland in an international dual nations match against the Netherlands.
He transitioned to the professional circuit following his 2019 success, securing a number of victories. His last recorded professional fight took place in April 2021, and he finished his pro career with two wins. McCullagh was a proud member of St. John Bosco Boxing Club in West Belfast and also fought for his family's own gym, McCullagh's ABC in Dunmurry.
A Formidable Boxing Legacy
The young boxer was part of a storied Belfast boxing dynasty. He was the grandson of the late, legendary coach Paul McCullagh, a highly respected figure who dedicated years to coaching at the Immaculata amateur club. The elder McCullagh, who passed away in October 2018 at the age of 72, trained iconic fighters such as Barry McGuigan and Hugh Russell.
Paul Jr's father, also named Paul, continues the family's deep involvement in the sport. He is a professional referee and was himself a champion amateur boxer in his youth, having boxed out of the Immaculata BC.
An Outpouring of Grief and Tributes
The Irish Athletic Boxing Association (IABA) led the formal tributes, expressing profound sadness at the loss. In a statement, they said: "IABA is saddened by the passing of boxer, 25 year old Paul McCullough Junior... IABA extends deepest condolences to Paul's family, club and loved ones."
Personal grief poured in from those who knew him. Former amateur teammate and Olympic medallist Aidan Walsh wrote: "RIP my big mate I'll never forget our memories together." His trainer, Jonathan O'Brien, posted a heartfelt message: "Rest in peace my boy, loved you like my son. You're in heaven with your grandad Paul."
The Belfast Boxers page also shared the sombre news, stating: "Heartbreaking way to start the year. Paul McCullagh Jnr has passed away after a short illness condolences to his family and friends especially at St John Bosco boxing club Belfast Rest in peace big man."
The sudden death of Paul McCullagh Jr marks a devastating loss for his family, his clubs, and the wider sporting community in Belfast, where his potential and his family's legacy were held in the highest regard.
