George Foreman's Iowa Burial Site Revealed Following 1988 Visit
The late boxing icon George Foreman has been laid to rest in a cemetery in northwestern Iowa, a location he selected based on a single peaceful visit to the region nearly four decades ago. Foreman passed away on March 21, 2025, at the age of 76 in Houston, Texas, and was buried a month later at Logan Park Cemetery in Sioux City, Iowa, as confirmed by city officials.
Family Reveals Burial Location and Monument
Foreman's family returned to his burial site on Thursday, holding a news conference with Sioux City Mayor Bob Scott to publicly disclose the location. The site features a large monument bearing an image of Foreman as a teenager following his Olympic gold medal boxing victory. In a statement released by Sioux City officials, the family explained that Foreman had visited the city in 1988 and often recalled the profound sense of peace he experienced there.
After traveling to Sioux City on April 17 last year to bury Foreman, his family stated they immediately understood the region's unique appeal. "Our father lived a life of purpose, faith and gratitude," the family said. "To see him laid to rest in a place that brought him peace means everything to us."
Mayor Reflects on Foreman's Connection to Sioux City
Mayor Bob Scott joined the family at Foreman's monument, which lies just a few miles north of the Missouri River in this upper Midwest city of nearly 87,000 residents. The cemetery overlooks the scenic Loess Hills, formed by windblown silt deposits that reach up to 200 feet high and stretch along the river for 200 miles along the Iowa border.
"Their story is a reminder of how one place can stay with someone for a lifetime," Scott remarked, highlighting the enduring impact of Foreman's brief visit.
Foreman's Legendary Boxing Career and Legacy
A native Texan, George Foreman first rose to fame when he made the 1968 U.S. Olympic boxing team, winning gold in Mexico City. He became the heavyweight champion of the world in 1973 by defeating the great Joe Frazier, only to lose the title a year later to Muhammad Ali in the historic "Rumble in the Jungle" match. In a remarkable comeback, Foreman became the oldest man to win the heavyweight championship at age 45 in 1994, defeating Michael Moorer in an epic upset.
Foreman retired in 1997 with an impressive career record of 76-5. He then transitioned into a successful career as a businessman, pitchman, and occasional actor, becoming widely known to a new generation as the face of the George Foreman Grill. This simple cooking machine sold more than 100 million units and ultimately brought him greater wealth than his boxing career. A biographical movie based on Foreman's life was released in 2023, further cementing his legacy in popular culture.
