Anthony Joshua Injuries Feared Worse Than First Thought After Fatal Nigeria Crash
Anthony Joshua injuries 'worse than thought' after fatal crash

Fears are growing that British boxing star Anthony Joshua sustained more serious injuries than first reported after being involved in a horrific road accident in Nigeria that claimed the lives of two of his close friends.

Tragedy on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway

The incident occurred on the morning of Monday, 30 December 2025, along the busy Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, just outside Lagos. According to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) of Nigeria, a black Lexus Jeep collided with a stationary red commercial Sinotruck.

A total of five adult males were involved in the crash. Tragically, two individuals lost their lives, one sustained injuries, and two others escaped physically unharmed. Joshua was rescued from the scene alive and was initially said to have sustained minor injuries.

The FRSC's preliminary investigation indicated that the Lexus Jeep was suspected to have been travelling beyond the legal speed limit when it lost control during an overtaking manoeuvre and crashed into the parked truck.

Victims Identified and Worsening Injury Concerns

The two men who died were identified as Joshua's close friends and team members: personal trainer Latif 'Latz' Ayodele and strength and conditioning coach Sina Ghami. Ayodele had been playing table tennis with Joshua merely hours before the fatal crash, a moment the boxer had shared on social media.

While initial reports and a statement from Matchroom Boxing confirmed Joshua was in a stable condition with minor injuries, new concerns have emerged. Sources close to the former two-time unified heavyweight world champion now fear his condition may be more severe.

As reported by the Daily Mail, there are concerns within Joshua's inner circle about potential rib and knee injuries, suggesting the damage from the impact could be worse than first assessed following the accident.

Boxing World Mourns and Offers Support

The boxing community has been quick to offer condolences following the devastating news. Joshua's promoter, Eddie Hearn, led the tributes, posting on Instagram: "With the heaviest of hearts. Two great men. Rest in eternal peace Sina and Latz. My thoughts and deepest prayers are with everyone."

Matchroom Boxing and 258 BXG released a joint statement confirming the passing of Ayodele and Ghami. The statement noted that Joshua was receiving medical checks and observation in hospital and requested privacy for all those affected during this incredibly difficult time.

The remains of the deceased were conveyed to the Livewell Morgue in Ajaka, Sagamu, and the Nigeria Police Motor Traffic Division has been notified to conduct further investigation into the precise causes of the tragic collision.
