Anthony Joshua in Hospital After Fatal Car Crash in Nigeria

British heavyweight boxing star Anthony Joshua is undergoing hospital treatment following a devastating road accident in Nigeria that claimed the lives of two of his close friends and team members.

President Tinubu Offers Condolences and Support

Nigeria's President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has personally contacted both Anthony Joshua and his mother, Yeta Odusanya, in the wake of Monday's tragic incident near Lagos. The president, who is currently abroad, made the calls to offer his prayers and well-wishes.

Tinubu stated that the 36-year-old boxer assured him he was receiving the best possible care in hospital. The Nigerian leader also conveyed his heartfelt condolences over the deaths of Joshua's associates, Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele, who perished in the collision on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

"I spoke with AJ on the phone to personally convey my condolences over the death of his two associates," President Tinubu said. "I wished him well and prayed for him. He assured me that he is receiving the best care in the hospital."

Details of the Tragic Accident Emerge

The fatal crash occurred as Joshua, Ayodele, Ghami, and their driver were travelling to Ogun State. They were en route to join the boxer's family in Sagamu to celebrate the New Year, a family member confirmed to the BBC.

The Daily Mail reports that Joshua's injuries may be more severe than initially feared. Sources close to the former two-time unified world heavyweight champion suggest the damage could involve rib and knee injuries, according to a person within his inner circle.

A relative of Joshua's, speaking anonymously to the BBC, said: "We are hoping for his speedy recovery and also the people who passed away - I pray for. He's normally coming around for the New Year. We haven't seen him, so we were expecting him."

Concerns for Joshua's Boxing Future

The accident has cast a shadow over Joshua's boxing career, with immediate concerns focused on his recovery. The tragedy also prompted an earlier written statement from President Tinubu on X, formerly known as Twitter.

In his statement, Tinubu wrote: "AJ, I extend my deep sympathies to you following the tragic accident... which claimed two precious lives and caused you injuries. This immense tragedy casts a deep shadow on this season." He praised Joshua's courage and discipline, calling him a "source of national pride."

The president also confirmed he spoke to Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, who was at the hospital with Joshua and his mother. The Governor assured Tinubu that he would ensure Joshua receives the best possible medical attention.

As the boxing world and fans await further updates, the focus remains on Joshua's health and recovery, while mourning the loss of Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele.
