Saturday Racing Tips: Newbury and Newmarket Best Bets

Saturday racing tips: Best bets for Newbury and Newmarket. Horse racing correspondent Jonathan Doidge has been running the rule over the Newbury and Newmarket cards.

  • Damysus (Newbury, 14.35) – 2pts win @ 3/1 (William Hill)
  • Al Azd (Newbury, 15.45) – 1pt each-way @ 5/1 (William Hill)
  • Wiltshire (Newbury, 16.20) – 1pt win @ 9/2 (bet365)
  • Lost Signal (Newbury, 17.40) – 1pt win @ 5/2 (bet365)
  • Son (Newmarket, 14.50) – 1pt each-way @ 15/2 (bet365)

It's another super Saturday of action and I've got five racing tips for the day. Without further ado, let's get stuck into the runners that have caught my eye on betting sites.

Damysus can justify Lockinge favouritism

I think horse racing betting sites have it right here with Damysus as the favourite in what is a competitive renewal of this Group 1 event over 1m. The Gosdens decided to send him to the Group 3 Earl of Sefton Stakes (1m1f, good) at the Craven Meeting to give him his seasonal reappearance and he duly obliged by an easy 3¾l. He's proven over further but drops back in trip for this. I think that's fine and if you watch that Earl of Sefton win, he is definitely not short of pace and the way he put daylight between himself and the field was impressive. This can sometimes be a bit of a forgotten Group 1 but the Gosdens do like to find one for it and have trained the winner in three of the last five seasons. Damysus will face stiff competition from Zeus Olympios, Notable Speech and The Lion In Winter, who represents Aidan O'Brien, but he's an improving four-year-old and I think he can complete a hat-trick in the race for his trainers.

Newbury tip 1: Damysus – 2pts win @ 3/1 (William Hill)

Al Azd a contender

My Love Is King is an improving son of Kingman and hasn't lost much in defeat on his last two starts. The Gosdens go for cheekpieces this time to try and give him the edge but the one I like is Al Azd, who looks a very lively each-way player at the prices on betting apps. He's 5/1 at the time of writing and, although more exposed than some, his latest effort was still an improved one, when scoring easily at Doncaster (1m4f, good to firm). The company he keeps gets more competitive this time but his extra experience might well prove to be a good thing when push comes to shove. I also think that he's shown the pace to handle the drop back to 1m2f.

Newbury tip 2: Al Azd – 1pt each-way @ 5/1 (William Hill)

Wiltshire can find new home at Newbury

An open-looking handicap on paper with 15 going to post. Among those with chances are Mirabeau, who scored over C&D last time and tries to bridge the gap in class with a follow-up success. He definitely has a squeak and I wouldn't put anyone off having an each-way interest. However, I liked the way that Wiltshire went about his business in winning at Newcastle (6f, AW) on his first start since having wind surgery. He's up 6lb for that 1l win but I he found plenty when required and he still looks well treated to my eye, despite the handicapper putting him up by that much. The official forecast going is good but if any of the rain in the weather forecast hits, it could slow things a little and that would also be a positive for the chances of the selection, returning to turf for the first time since the Group 3 Bengough Stakes at Ascot last October.

Newbury tip 3: Wiltshire (Newbury, 16.20) – 1pt win @ 9/2 (bet365)

Lost Signal can reconnect with winner's enclosure

This could turn out to be a good opportunity for Lost Signal to win on his handicap debut. Richard Hannon's three-year-old won twice at up to 7½f as a juvenile, both on a sound surface, and he returned to action at the Craven Meeting with an improved effort when 3l second to Talk Of New York in a conditions event. The conditions of that race mean that the handicapper has been unable to move his mark for this handicap introduction and that looks to be a good thing for us, as he now looks well treated. That latest Newmarket contest was over 7f but pedigree suggests he'll be better for the step up to 1m for the first time and he looks worth siding with.

Newbury tip 4: Lost Signal – 1pt win @ 5/2 (bet365)

Go on my Son at Newmarket

There are several in here with claims, with Forty Years On and Golden Redemption both potentially well treated, while Silver Ghost and Shah can have cases made. More exposed than some but no less competitive for that should be Son, who raids from Tim Easterby's Great Habton yard. The five-year-old has been back in better form in his two starts since joining Easterby from Richard Hannon, finishing runner-up at both Thirsk and Haydock (both 7f, good). He's only gone up 1lb each time and a quick glance at his best form suggests he's well treated again. He can be backed each-way to three places.

Newmarket tip: Son – 1pt each-way @ 15/2 (bet365)

Free horse racing bets

Each Saturday, LiveScore Bet runs a money-back offer on one of the races shown on live ITV Racing that day. This week, that race is the 14.50 at Newmarket, for which I've put up Son. If you decide to have a wager on that race and your selection finishes 2nd, 3rd or 4th, you'll receive your stake back in free bets. There's no need to opt in to the offer, just place a wager on the race and if your runner places but doesn't win, you'll receive a free bet refund, up to a maximum of £10. Only the win part of any each-way bets will be credited back to LiveScore Bet punters.
