Hunter-Bell took the lead with 300 metres remaining and held off a late challenge from Poland's Sofia Ennaoui, who finished second in 3:58.79. Germany's Hanna Klein took bronze in 3:59.18.

The British athlete's time was the fastest in the world this year and moved her to fifth on the UK all-time list.

Reaction and significance

After the race, Hunter-Bell said: "I can't quite believe it. I came here hoping for a medal but to win gold and run that time is beyond my wildest dreams."

Her victory was Britain's first gold of the championships, which are being held in Rome. The British team had previously won two silvers and a bronze.
