Henderson breaks silence after freak World Cup injury

Jordan Henderson has spoken out for the first time since suffering a broken wrist in a freak accident that is expected to rule him out for the remainder of the World Cup. The 36-year-old England midfielder was injured after the final whistle of England's 3-2 victory over Mexico at the Estadio Azteca, when he fell awkwardly while attempting to climb over advertising boards to celebrate with fans. He was stretchered off, given oxygen, and taken to hospital, while the rest of the squad flew to Kansas City.

Henderson's Social Media Response

Despite the severity of the injury, which requires surgery, Henderson took to social media to focus on the team's performance rather than his misfortune. He wrote on Instagram: "A night to remember that’s for sure! What an incredible performance against all the different challenges. So proud to be a part of this special team. Thanks for all the support, another big one Saturday."

Team-mates quickly showed their support. Vice-captain Declan Rice commented "Some man," while Morgan Rogers said "What a guy." Elliot Anderson and Djed Spence responded with heart emojis.

Guehi Provides Update on Henderson's Condition

England defender Marc Guehi gave an update on Henderson's state of mind, telling the FA's Lions' Den show: "Hendo's good, man. Hendo's in a better place than he was yesterday, and it was obviously scary for him and his family and for everyone else, but we're just glad that he's on the road to speedy recovery." Henderson is keen to stay with the squad to offer support and has been in regular contact with team-mates.

Henderson's England Career and World Cup Record

Henderson won his 90th cap when he came off the bench against Panama in the group stage. He is the only England men's player to feature at four World Cup tournaments. Manager Thomas Tuchel selected him for his experience and leadership, despite widespread opposition. Henderson said in June: "It’s the same as always, to be the best version of myself, to be ready to help the team on and off the pitch and give absolutely everything to help this team be successful."

It remains unclear if Henderson will travel with the squad for their quarter-final against Norway on Saturday. His injury may mark the end of his England career, as the World Cup was expected to be his final tournament.
